DESCRIPTION:Saturday 3rd October 2026 \nDoors open at 7:00pm (gig starts at 7:45pm) \nTickets priced at £19.50 \nDar Williams’ lyrics contain bouquets of optimism\, delivered on melodies alternating between beguiling lightness and understated gravity. Williams strongly believes that all of us possess our own power and ability to achieve\, and she rejects the exceptionalism that encourages us to “admire that yonder star\,” while making us feel small and insignificant; unworthy of shining on our own but hoping to catch enough distant light to inspire some tiny accomplishment. Williams has always been very interested in how to control our future and this album has to do with the fact that at some point\, you just can’t. \nLike everyone else\, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. She and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album\, her 12th studio recording\, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020\, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell\, who produced the track and played guitars\, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar. When told they had to postpone a mid-March mixing date\, Campbell said he wasn’t feeling well anyway. Turns out he’d contracted a serious case of COVID-19. That was a clear sign that at some point\, you have to meet life where it meets you …the common thread throughout that these songs\, the willingness to meet life as it arrives. \nDar Williams was always in the right place at the right time for the success she’s had over a 25+-year career. She rose out of the vibrant mid-90’s Boston scene\, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers\, Berklee jazz musicians\, slam poets\, and folk artists\, like Patty Griffith\, Melissa Ferrick\, the Throwing Muses\, Vance Gilbert\, and Jonathan Brooke. After a year of touring non-stop with her first album\, The Honesty Room\, in 1994\, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. “Good and bad things happen\, and it’s not necessarily a reward or indictment. I’ve just got to meet it.” Williams observes. “Like\, I’m bringing my whole life to this moment; it will surprise me\, challenge me\, show me where I was wrong\, even make a fool out of me\, but my job is to show up and not take adversity personally. Real happiness doesn’t have to feel like Snoopy dancing with Woodstock; it can just be knowing you have the resilience to meet whatever comes to you. I will call that a good life.”

DESCRIPTION:Severn Folk are thrilled to be hosting a Bouzouki workshop by legend Benji Kirkpatrick (of Bellowhead\, Faustus\, Seth Lakeman Band and Steeleye Span fame)\, in the afternoon before his concert in the evening. \nThis hour-and-a-half workshop will be targeted to intermediate Bouzouki players and will be exploring aspects such as chord inversions\, playing melody and finger training exercises. DESCRIPTION:‘Tis the season to be Folky! Come and celebrate Severn Folk Club’s final club night of 2026 in style with our guest artist\, Bouzouki legend and fellow Salopian Benji Kirkpatrick. As well as Benji’s performance\, there will also be support from a local floor performer and the resident “Reabrook B Band”\, as well as the usual Folky shenanigans that regulars to the club have come to expect! \n  \nIn the afternoon\, Benji will be running a Bouzouki workshop for intermediate players. The workshop is £25 per person\, you can find out more and book your place here \n  \nMembers will need to buy their ticket via the member’s booking form or on a club night to receive their discount for their concert and/or workshop tickets. \n  \nThe venue is the Reabrook Club in Shrewsbury (opposite Cineworld). The club has a small carpark and drinks are available from the bar. All ages are welcome but under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n  \nAbout The Artist \nBenji Kirkpatrick is a singer\, songwriter and musician. A “fretboard wizard” (Time Out) of multiple stringed instruments – bouzouki\, guitar\, banjo\, mandolin – he has been performing solo for over 25 years. As a key founder member of folk big band\, Bellowhead\, Benji has enjoyed playing in front of large festival audiences as well appearances on the likes of Later… with Jools Holland. His latest solo album In Phase\, released in autumn 2023\, features all original songs written between 2020 and 2022. Lauded releases such as ‘Boomerang’ (2008) and ‘Hendrix Songs’ (2015) – an album of acoustic re-interpretations of the work of Jimi Hendrix – have punctuated his exploits over the years alongside extensive work with others. 2019 saw the release of ‘Gold Has Worn Away’ on German based label Westpark Music\, the only release from Benji’s then band ‘Benji Kirkpatrick & The Excess’; a roots-based power trio comprising of Pete Thomas (Jackie Oates\, Megan Henwood) on bass and Joelle Barker (Edwin Starr band\, Del Camino) on drums. Pete Flood\, also of Bellowhead\, occupied the drum seat until 2022. \n  \nBenji was head hunted by folk rock pioneers\, Steeleye Span in 2017 (40 years after his dad\, John\, was in the band) and was a member until 2021\, featuring on 50th anniversary album ‘Est’d. 1969’. He was one third of ‘bloke folk’ trio\, ‘Faustus’\, along with Paul Sartin and Saul Rose\, whose hard-hitting brand of English folk hammered it’s mark onto the scene until the untimely and tragic death of Paul in 2022. \nBenji is a long-term collaborator with Seth Lakeman\, featuring on the successful releases ‘Kitty Jay’\, ‘Freedom Fields’\, ‘Make Your Mark’ and latest release ‘The Granite Way’ and tours with Seth regularly. \n  \nBenji has also worked with Oysterband\, was a part of the 2017 revival production of Peter Bellamy’s ‘folk opera’\, The Transports\, alongside The Young ‘Uns\, Nancy Kerr\, Greg Russell and Matthew Crampton\, and featured in The Lady: An homage… to Sandy Denny\, a 2012 nationwide tour also featuring Maddy Prior\, Thea Gilmore\, Dave Swarbrick\, Joan as Policewoman\, Lavinia Blackwall and PP Arnold. \n  \nHe has also done other things… and is as happy in small grassroots venues as in front of a thousands strong crowd.
