SUMMARY:Shrewsbury Songwriters April 2025
DESCRIPTION:Free monthly socials for music writers of all levels and stages\, where they can meet up\, discuss different approaches to writing and perform new songs in a safe space with other music writers. As an optional aspect\, a brief to write to is given every two months. It is totally your choice whether you do this or not and we welcome any other songs you have written that are not done to the brief. The idea of this is to give an opportunity to push yourself into different areas\, topics and musical approaches that you may not have written about before. With a different focus area for the subject and the music sides of things\, you can really dive in and use the briefs as opportunities to experiment. These meet-ups really are completely open-to-all\, meaning that if you haven’t started writing songs or tunes yet but think you might like to try then please come along. There is no commitment necessary and you can just sit and listen if you want – you will be made very welcome! If you would like to learn more then you can either join our Facebook group (Shrewsbury Songwriters) or drop me an email on my Contact page.

SUMMARY:Steve Knightley and Daniel Salavatore Sanctuary - Songs from Sacred Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Away from the clamour and energy of The Winter Yards Band\, Steve Knightley’s spring tour reveals a very different side to his music. Sanctuary – Songs in Sacred Spaces is a calm\, immersive and contemplative series of performances created specifically for churches\, chapels and historic venues. Drawing on influences from Bob Dylan to William Blake\, from the English folk tradition to his own finely crafted compositions\, Steve explores songs of history\, landscape and human experience — material that resonates naturally in rooms shaped by centuries of song and prayer. \nThese concerts will be reflective\, ambient and atmospheric\, inviting audiences to listen more deeply in spaces where sound lingers and attention settles. Each evening also features special guest Dan Salvatore\, whose hand-forged handpan brings a meditative\, bell-like presence — an instrument designed to evoke harmony\, balance and relaxation. Together\, Steve and Dan create a unique sound together.

SUMMARY:Lights Out Events - Sound of the Sirens
DESCRIPTION:Sound of the Sirens. Friday 20th March – 8pm (Doors 7.15pm) \nLights Out Events are delighted to welcome Sound of the Sirens \nA brilliant singer-songwriting duo based in Exeter\, Devon comprising of Abbe Martin & Hannah Wood. \nHoning their craft over the past decade\, Martin & Wood have cemented themselves as firm favourites as “one of the UK’s finest folk acts” not only on the Westcountry scene\, but nationally\, and internationally too. Their status\, and fast-growing fan-base is not only testament to the pair’s prowess as songwriters and musicians\, but as people too. \nMartin & Wood are two of the hardest working musicians on the scene and wear their hearts very much on their sleeves in terms of their songwriting. The pair glide gracefully through laments of past relationships\, and life experiences\, as well as highlighting the important topics of the day\, namely mental health awareness\, and homelessness. Not to be missed! \n

SUMMARY:Charm of Finches at The Hive
DESCRIPTION:Australian sister duo Charm of Finches delivers intricate folk-pop that is simultaneously graceful and darkly bewitching. Their seamless blood harmonies traverse melancholy and wonder in equal measure. \nThe sisters\, Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes\, have toured extensively throughout the UK\, Europe and Canada in 2022\, 2023 and 2024. \nTheir fourth studio album ‘Marlinchen In The Snow’ was recorded in rural Nova Scotia with acclaimed Canadian producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant\, Good Lovelies)\, inspired by the frozen beauty of the landscape\, Grimms’ Fairy Tales from their childhood and their transient life on the road with their music. \nThey return with the release of their brand new single ‘Meteor’\, inspired by the powerful forces of nature that reflect a tumultuous inner world. Recorded by the ocean in Victoria\, Australia and mixed in Canada\, Meteor marks the beginning of a string of new music to be released throughout 2026. \nCharm of Finches are winners of the Australian Folk Music Awards Best Folk Album (2022)\, Music Victoria Best Folk Act (2021) and have been nominated twice for the Australian Music Prize. \n“Wonderful Oblivion is a triumphant indie folk effort – nostalgic yet fresh\, haunting\, but at the same time serene. ” – We Found New Music \n“Melbourne sister duo Charm of Finches are perched for stardom. For lovers of tight sibling harmonies\, chamber folk\, and those who long to be carried-away by a lullaby…” – ArianaMorgenstern KCRW Today’s Top Tune

SUMMARY:Wassail Celebration 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Wolseley Centre will be hosting a Wassail ceremony to wake up the apple trees in our orchard. \nWassailing is a traditional ceremony that involves singing and drinking to the health of trees on the Twelfth Night. The purpose of wassailing is to awaken the cider apple trees and to scare away evil spirits to ensure a good harvest of fruit in the Autumn. \nThe ceremonies of each wassail varied from village to village but they generally all have the same core elements. A wassail King and Queen lead the song or a processional tune to be played/sung from one orchard to the next; the wassail Queen is then lifted into the boughs of the tree where she places toast soaked in wassail from the clayen cup as a gift to the tree spirits (and to show the fruits created the previous year). In some counties\, the youngest boy or “Tom Tit” will stand in for the Queen and hang the cider-soaked toast in the tree. Then an incantation is usually recited. \nOur Wassail will be hosted by local Druids who will be toasting the trees to ensure a good harvest\, so wrap up warm\, bring along your instruments and  toast (yes toasted bread) have a sing along or just spectate what we hope will become an annual event. Our cafe will be open for you to purchase drinks and snacks. \nVisitors will firstly be entertained by Morris dancers and then a play by the Mummers. Revellers will then be invited to make their way to the orchard where local druids will lead the ceremony of dancing and singing around the trees. Everyone is encouraged to bring along lanterns\, toast\, drums and bells\, or any instrument that can make a noise to wake up the trees. \nNo Booking Required

SUMMARY:Shrewsbury Songwriters December 2025 (Naughty or Nice)
DESCRIPTION:Free monthly socials for music writers of all levels and stages\, where they can meet up\, discuss different approaches to writing and perform new songs in a safe space with other music writers. \nAs an optional aspect\, a brief to write to is given every two months. \nThese meet-ups really are completely open-to-all\, meaning that if you haven’t started writing songs or tunes yet but think you might like to try then please come along. There is no commitment necessary and you can just sit and listen if you want – you will be made very welcome! \nIf you would like to learn more then you can either join our Facebook group (Shrewsbury Songwriters) or drop me an email on my Contact page. \n  \nBrief: Naughty or Nice \n  \n\nThis month’s brief is all about one question – Have you been NAUGHTY or NICE?\n\n\nSt Nicholas (AKA Santa Klaus or Father Christmas) is associated with rewarding good children with presents at Christmas. What you might not know is the legend of Krampus – this dark spirit is said to visit naughty children and punish them!\n\n\n \n\n\nFor this month’s brief\, choose Santa or Krampus (or perhaps both!) as the inspiration for a song or instrumental piece.\n\n\n \n\n\nWill it be Ho\, Ho\, Ho or No\, No\, No?

DESCRIPTION:Event 8.0 of Season 3.0 \nMerope’s roots lie deep in the soil of Lithuania’s folk songs\, connecting them with ideas from across the cultural map. Tangling elements gleaned from jazz\, traditional\, ambient music\, 20th century minimalism and kosmische into their moving\,\nhumanist compositions\, they provide a soundtrack for today’s international landscape. \nSupport comes from M.Haiux which is the musical alter ego of Liverpool based guitarist Matthew McPartlan. Having recently released his debut EP\, ‘A Crying Shame’\, Walker pours raw emotion and personal experience into his songs\, drawing inspiration from legends like Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. His storytelling is absolutely brilliant\, and his performance is sure to be a deeply moving experience. \n  \nRounding off our showcase is Quantum Penguin\, the multi-instrumentalist project of Matt Woolley. From lilting\, emotional ballads to joyfully energetic fiddle and bouzouki tunes\, Quantum Penguin offers a dynamic and captivating set. A nominee for “Folk Musician of the Year” and with his album ‘Adélie’ receiving critical acclaim\, Matt’s performances are a journey through the full spectrum of emotions. Don’t miss this eclectic and talented artist! \n  \nCome down to Albert’s Shed and discover your new favourite songwriter. We can’t wait to see you there! \n  \n  \nArtist biographies and links: \n  \nQUANTUM PENGUIN \nMatt Woolley is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter from Shropshire who plays under the name of Quantum Penguin. \nHis love of storytelling through song blended with driving instrumentals means his set is one minute lilting and filled with emotion and the next joyfully energetic with soaring Fiddle\, Guitar or Bouzouki. \n  \nMatt is a founding member of the Folk music group String Workshop and enjoys collaborating with fellow musicians and artists on various projects and art installations from Cornwall to Shropshire. \n  \nPast performances include Bromyard\, Warwick and Chippenham Folk Festivals\, the Shrewsbury LoopFest Music Festival\, Folk In The Orchard Festival\, Lichfield Festival of Folk and Brimfield and Dreamers Folk Clubs. \nHe was nominated for “Folk Musician of The Year” at the Shropshire Music Awards in both 2023 and 2024. His song This Gift\, about the importance of the countryside and preserving it for future generations\, was also awarded 3rd place at Lichfield Festival of Folk. \n  \nHis second album Adélie won “Best Album” at the Shropshire Music Awards and “Album of The Series” on the Salopian Mixtape podcast. In the album\, Matt takes advantage of being able to layer-up instruments to his songs that he otherwise wouldn’t be able to in his live performances\, featuring his collection of instruments that include Fiddle\, Guitar\, Bouzouki\, Vocals and Chin-Cello. The album includes several of his songs covering a wide range of topics\, from shipwrecks to homelessness to songs about musicians’ woes. \n  \nFrom songs that make you cry to rip-roaring Fiddle tunes that will make you stomp your foot\, Matt will guide you through the full spectrum of emotions while you sing along! \n  \n“Matthew Woolley played an incredible set at Chippenham 2023 so much so that we invited him back in 2024. Matthew’s love for the folk tradition shines through his soulful singing and exceptional multi instrumental accompaniments.” (Debra Hannis – Chippenham Folk Festival) \n  \n“It was a joy to see an artist play in a finger picked style\, it’s not a style usually adopted by bouzouki players\, but Matt did a wonderful job\, and it very much complimented the songs he chose to sing… He rounded off the performance with a set of tunes on the fiddle and it was very apparent that this was his forte… A rising star indeed.” (Will Sartin – Patakas) \n  \n“A talented multi-instrumentalist\, switching effortlessly from bouzouki to guitar to fiddle\, Matthew’s song and tune writing abilities are truly impressive. His songs\, though based in the time-honoured folk tradition\, sound fresh and contemporary and pursue arresting and intricate narratives. His violin compositions provide welcome additions to the established canon of fiddle tunes and he sings with a rich mature voice which belie his years.” (Fergus Reid – Wheatsheaf Open Mic Shrewsbury) \n  \n“Matthew approaches folk music with such a refreshing exuberance… The multi-instrumentalist is a delight to watch and hear. This is a new generation of Folk Singer\, and it is exciting\, he leaves one with no doubt that our traditional music will be left in safe hands if all performers were to apply themselves as Matthew has… With a clarity of vocal akin to crystal\, Matthew is undoubtedly on the right end of a very busy and active career.
