This September of Sound, you’ll be writing four songs or instrumentals for your own EP! There will be four briefs to write to (one every week starting from today) to help kick-start your creativity but open enough to still be very much your own piece.
What is September of Sound?
I started September of Sound a few years ago for the songwriting group I run in Shrewsbury, called Shrewsbury Songwriters, as a challenge to write a song or tune every week in September. The aim was to kickstart all of our creativity and we all had a load of fun and got some new material!
Over the years we have also had several people join in with the challenge who were quite a distance away from Shrewsbury but were able to join in remotely, as well as some who had never written a song or tune before, so if you fancy joining in with this challenge then don’t let anything stop you!
If you want to share your piece for a brief, then you can either use the hashtag #SeptemberOfSound and #ShrewsburySongwriters on your social media (we’ve also got a Facebook group called Shrewsbury Songwriters where you can share your songs and chat with other songwriters and an Instagram account called @shrewsburysongwriters that you can tag us in with!) or send us a message on the Severn Folk Contact Form here
The Briefs
There are four briefs for this year’s challenge, released every week and listed underneath. Each one will form part of your own EP and will be open enough for you to take the piece in whichever direction you want to.
Brief 1 (Write a piece inspired by a place you’ve been to.)

Brief 2 (Write a piece about a person you know.)

Brief 3 (Write a piece about a season (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) that you like (or dislike!)

Brief 4 (Write a piece about an issue you care about.)
